Master Chief is Changing In Halo 4

343's Frank O'Connor has explained why Master Chief looks a little different in the reveal trailer for Halo 4, hinting that his personality is going to change as well.

In an E3 interview with Official Xbox Magazine, O'Connor, formerly of Bungie and the Halo series' Franchise Director, had this to say: "There's some story behind his new look... There are specific reasons why he looks the way he does and why some of his behaviours have changed. We'll see in good time."

That means changes to his personality as well as just the armour, then. Intriguing.

Some of us noticed the changes to Master Chief's Spartan armour in the E3 reveal trailer – in particular, the gap in the armour around the groin that was previously covered by a shiny green metal plate.

Bye-bye, Spartan codpiece! We will all miss you.

Super Smash Bros For The Wii U And 3DS Don't Have Dev Teams Yet

Super Smash Bros games for the Wii U and 3DS were announced earlier this month at E3 2011. The announcement was made prematurely in hopes of recruiting a development staff. Neither game currently have a team dedicated to making the titles. Project Sora's Masahiro Sakurai will be leading the two Super Smash Bros. games but he and his team are busy working on another Nintendo title. "Right now, we're devoting all our manpower to working on Kid Icarus," Sakurai said in Famitsu.
"We've got no plans whatsoever -- we've got two new games out in the open when there's no extra time to work with them at all. It makes me cringe, and I'm not sure it's the smartest thing to make gamers wait for several years, but the early announcement was made chiefly in order to attract new team members."
Keep reading for more from Sakurai.
"Project Sora had intended to make a 3DS Smash Bros. once it had finished up a game on the system and had gotten used to the hardware’s feature set. With the advent of the Wii U, though, we had a choice to make. Iwata asked us if wanted to make the next Smash Bros. on the Wii U or 3DS, and my thought was that we had to go on both platforms.”
Satoru Iwata announced Super Smash Bros during the Nintendo press conference with no trailer, no pictures, and no mention of a time line. The crowd didn't care, it was one of the most cheered-for announcements during the conference. Now that we know the reason for the lack of media was because there are no games to speak of, I imagine there's less cheering.
Turns out Iwata made a similar move for Super Smash Bros. Brawl at E3 2005. There wasn't a development team in place at the time of the announcement. Iwata hoped his friend Sakurai would develop the game. Since he was only a freelance dev at the time, he didn't have a team to take on the game. SSB: Brawl was released in 2008.
I have mixed feelings about this. Is it fair to announce a game that's still in purely a conceptual stage? And more importantly, will I have to wait three years for another Super Smash Bros game?

E3 impressions: Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3

If there was one title shown at the 2011 E3 Expo that is sure to be an instant blockbuster hit, it's Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

A nod to a chilling real-life possibility of a military invasion on American soil, the E3 demonstration showed Navy SEALs boarding a Russian submarine and blowing it up in the middle of an intense naval battle near Battery Park (as in New York City's Battery Park). The underwater sequence as well as the close-quarters environment of the sub showed off the game's intense action with explosions and gunfire seemingly around every corner. New York isn't the only Western location players of Modern Warfare 3 will visit. A sequence based in London was also shown at the trade show.

The graphical stylings of Modern Warfare 3didn't come across as anything new compared to the previous games in the MWseries, but the quality of those graphics look to be far superior than they have in the past.  The chaos of militaristic firefights come across as more intense and even more authentic with the improved visuals and well-mixed audio.  If the demonstration is of any indication, players should be well satisfied with the game in these departments.
Unless major changes or off-the-wall reveals occur between E3 and the game's November 2011 launch, players can expect a very standard Modern Warfare gameplay experience.  While that might seem like there will be nothing new with the game, that's not entirely true.  New locations, enemies, and additions to weaponry, as well as tweaks to already established gameplay should make Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 the blockbuster title it's expected to be.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations Trailer, The Literal Version

Very entertaining.

Kinect's 'super-responsive' making it a must get!!

Experienced Kinect developers are starting to unlock "a whole bunch of new stuff" with their "super-responsive" second-round of Kinect titles.

That's according to Kinect's Microsoft creative director, Kudo Tsunoda, who told assembled press at E3 that lowering the latency of the Xbox 360 is allowing new kinds of experience, such as the freshly-revealed Kinect Star Wars.

"I think the great thing about Kinect, and you saw so many new types of experience at the E3 keynote, is it's all being down with the same hardware and development tools that have been available for a while - it's just us as developers getting better at using the technology," he said.

"You could see that in Kinect Star Wars: we've got the responsiveness down now where you could be blocking laser shots coming in with the lightsaber, which obviously needs to be very responsive to be able to do that.

"You can even knock the laser shots back at those firing at you by getting in ahead of where they're coming in," he said.

Tsunoda added that "super-responsive" latency is essential for making games like Star Wars "feel right".

"The amount of precise control and responsiveness you need to do those detailed actions inside a game, and to make those feel right so you feel like a super-powerful Jedi... obviously not getting latency in the game is going to enable that kind of experience," he said.

"It's super-responsive, and that's certainly unlocking a whole bunch of new stuff."

Microsoft released its Kinect Windows SDK last week. We look forward to seeing everyone's crazy creations.

Ubisoft also revealed over Twitter that pre-ordering the game from GameStop will also give you beta access plus a free upgrade to a Signature Edition. However, it’s unclear if that deal applies to the PS3 version of Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier.

Gears of War was a crap shoot, says Epic

The original Gears of War was a risky venture for Epic Games, it has been revealed.

Senior gameplay director Lee Perrydescribed its cover-based gameplay as "a total crap shoot" because the studio wasn't sure whether people would enjoy it.

"Cover-based play was a total crap shoot for us, because we didn't know whether people would find it fun to get into cover and not get shot," he told Digital Spy.

"For all we knew, people might just see that as cowardly and defensive. But we hit this really magic time to launch a cool new IP, because the Xbox 360 came along and people were willing to try new styles of play.

Perry added: "The timing worked out really well, and we were very fortunate to take advantage of that. The rest is history."

Gears of War has since become one of the Xbox 360's biggest franchises, with the latest installment Gears of War 3 breaking pre-order records for the system.

Gears of War 3 will be released exclusively on Xbox 360 on September 20 worldwide.

Retailer Briefed On New PlayStation 3 Model

CECH-3000 model cuts power and weight, and makes a few external changes.

First word of a new "CECH-3000" model PlayStation 3 surfaced earlier this month. Now a retailer, claiming to have received a briefing on the new model from Sony, has passed along some details.
The CECH-3000B is an updated 320 gigabyte system. It cuts power consumption from 230W to 200W, and cuts weight from 3.0kg to 2.6kg. There are also some external changes to the power and eject buttons, along with the removal of LED lamps, although the retailer report isn't clear about the specifics for this area.
Pricing remains the same as the current model. The new version will be shipped to retailers once current stock runs out.
