343's guide to Halo CE: Anniversary

News of Microsoft's HD Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary has been warmly welcomed by the franchise's mega-fans.
Not only does the game offer a cut-price chance for us all to relive the heady days of the first time we met Master Chief - but it's an ideal point for newcomers to drop into the series.

At E3, CVG caught up with the game's exec producer, Dan Ayoub, in which he discussed much of what fans can expect to change - and what will stay the same.

Here, we repeat Dan's words verbatim, so you too can get 343's side of the story....

Obviously 343 has been really busy with Halo for some time as the stewards of the franchise. I guess this is a sneak peak at what we've been doing, talking through some of the campaign and letting you know what we're doing with Terminals, multiplayer and more.

The big question we hear is: 'Why?'. Obviously it's ten years since Combat Evolved initially launched, so we wanted to do something to celebrate that, but most importantly we're just responding to our fans. This is something Halo fans have been demanding for an extremely long time. This felt like the right time to do something to commemorate that event.

The first thing you'll notice in Combat Evolved Anniversary are the graphical upgrades. The game looks spectacular, like a modern day game. That was part of our goal, to show what Halo would have looked like if it launched today.

But something you may not have heard a lot about is the sound, which also getting a full makeover. All of the audio effects, weapon effects, the orchestral stuff is being worked on with Skywalker Sound, so it's going to sound spectacular.

However, the big test for us is: 'How does it feel?' Everyone remembers the first time they played Halo. It had such a distinctive feel and it launched a generation of shooters, so it's really important to us to make sure it plays exactly as it did ten years ago.

On a personal level I was a PC shooter guy, the guy that was saying: "You're never going to get me to play a shooter on a console, it's never going to feel right." This is the game that changed things for me, and millions of others as well.

The way we retained that feel is quite interesting. On each disc, we're running two pieces of code: the original Halo engine is running to make sure the game plays and feels the same as it did ten years ago, and then on top we've also run a separate graphics engine over-layed on to the original engine code. That gives us the best of both worlds, so again, it looks and sounds like a current generation game but feels exactly like Halo.

It's a daunting task. That gameplay holds up today against any shooter out in the market. It launched a generation ago, and inspired a generation of shooters. We had extremely loud arguments about it - because it's very tempting when you get into it to say: "Oh, we could correct things that maybe people didn't like so much." But that's where this guiding pillar came in handy: to deliver the gameplay exactly as it was, warts and all. We definitely want it to be true to that original gameplay.

Xbox 720 Predictions

Yet another report has surface regarding Microsoft's successor to the Xbox 360. Apparently we can expect a reveal at E3 2012.
What do gamers think Microsoft's new console will have? What features will it include, and how will it better the current technology?
Cloud-based
This is quite clearly the future of gaming and media. Will the next console be exclusively cloud-based? Perhaps, maybe not, but it would be interesting.
OnLive is also supposedly encouraging Sony and Microsoft to use the technology, so if not in Xbox 720, the following console is a surety to implement it.
Controller-less
I think a standard controller will still come standard with the console, but its core functionality will be motion-based, using Kinect technology. This will include voice recognition and menu navigation.
Not that much graphically superior to Xbox 360/PS3
I think the PS3 is currently pushing the envelope as to what the console is capable of, but I don't think the 360 has reached its full potential. Cliffy B has even said this. I think the external harddrive and limited storage space on discs hurts progression of graphics on the console.
What do MMGN members think?
noobi
I agree that cloud based solutions will be incorporate but I don't think it would be a fully online deal like OnLive. Xbox Live is a big thing for them but they need to cater for everybody and weirdly enough a good number of people still don't even take their console online
I don't think they'll push Kinect that hard either. The interface stuff seems to be getting better but you can't replace the speed and accuracy of a controller. Kinect will be included, but more of a "it's there if you want it" scenario.
SSD would be a great inclusion as would faster processors. I agree that graphically we probably wont see a great improvement in the next gen but we will see games get more complex and run much more smoothly.
gdmatt
I don't think a OnLive type service will come with it, unless it's entirely optional, as not everyone has unlimited bandwidth and a fast connection. I certainly hope that the core Xbox experience will remain, if not, then Microsoft will lose a massive audience with the switch to motion based technology.
Halo 2 remake to be a launch title for the 720, then Halo 5 to come the year after, much like Halo CEA and Halo 4 are over the next two years.

Family Guy Online Beta

Well guys you guessed it Family Guy is coming out with its own game. If your interested in joining
the beta just click Here to register.

World of Warcraft gets unlimited free trial to level 20

Blizzard announced today that they’re completely revamping their trial account system. Instead of limiting the amount of time you can spend playing, which used to consist of just a 14 day trial, trial accounts will allow you to play as much as you want all the way up to level 20 on as many characters as you can create. Similar to the Warhammer Online endless trial in concept the free trial will however have some restrictions to help prevent spammers and the like. No details on that so far but the ability to use certain chat channels, trade and other such limiting actions are no doubt in order.

Anyone who's still stuck in the dark ages of WoW without any of the expansions now has the Burning Crusade added to their account for free. If you're up for doing the endless trial there’s a nice surprise waiting for you if you decide to subscribe in the form of getting both the original game and the Burning Crusade for only $20.

To some this seems like a cry for help from Blizzard as their subscriber numbers have seen quite the dip lately, even in light of their new expansion 'Cataclysm' having been released last year. To others it's just a nice gesture from one of their favourite developers. Personally, I think it might just be that the WoW wagon has run out of steam, possibly with a free to play model being announced soon. Who knows?

Sony: “Sorcery Is Still In Development”

Missing PlayStation Move title pulls re-appearing act

Good news everyone, the promising PlayStation Move title, Sorcery, is still in development despite disappearing from our radars for almost a year. Hugo Bustillos, Sony’s UK PR Executive today confirmed to us: “Yes, Sorcery is still in development.”
There are no details on a release date as of yet, we imagine there’s still some time to go. The last sign of life we had from the developer, The Workshop, was a job listing at Game Guzzlerfor a UI (User Interface) Artist, posted back in May this year.
Sony’s confirmation comes as a relief and a surprise. Usually, when you see nothing from a game in almost a year it means it has probably been canned. Hell, Activision cancelled True Crime: Hong Kong about a month before it was due to be released. They’re still carrying on with the half-assed Spider-Man and Tony Hawk’s game though.
At last year’s summer expos, Sorcery was one of the most well received PlayStation move titles as it wasn’t a mini-game collection or an existing game with motion-controls poorly forced in. This third-person adventure title looks to use the often-ignored navigation controller to move around and intuitive movements with the motion controller to cast spells and drink potions, instantly doing a better job than any of the Harry Potter Wii titles.
We began to wonder about the game when Sony showed off the new Move title, Medieval Moves: Deadmund’s Quest at this year’s E3. It looked quite similar to Sorcery, prompting thoughts that the new title from Zindagi Games had absorbed The Workshop’s title. Now we know that’s not the case.
Hopefully we’ll have some new images for Sorcery for you soon. We might even see a bit of a change in the art direction and tone as that is rumoured to be one of the reasons for the delay. It looked a bit middle-ground last time, not as cute as Medieval Moves, but not as violent as say, Dragon Age. That’s not necessarily a bad thing as the ‘older children’ market is woefully under-nourished. Although, with the Harry Potter films coming to a close, and wizardry shenanigans on the wane, we hope Sorcery hasn’t missed its chance by the time it goes to market. With any luck, it will be on show at Gamescom in August and we’ll be able to bring you all the latest information.

Bioshock Infinite: ‘No platform’s going to be the better platform’

Admit it or not, Bioshock Infinite was one of the most alluring games that we saw in action at this year’s E3 and is set to rule the roost when it releases in 2012 on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.
Nowadays with so many games going multiplatform, it’s obvious that certain gamers will question about the superior version.
In an intersting interview with Ausgamers, Shawn Robertson, Lead Artist on BioShock: Infinite has revealed that no platform is going to be a better platform and the game is being designed to utilize the strengths of each.
No platform’s going to be the “better platform”. We certainly.. if you look at what we did with BioShock One when we released on Xbox and PC, we had different designers working on different elements for PC versus Xbox — treating it like working to the strengths of each console. So we’re going to be releasing on PS3, Xbox and PC in 2012, so we’ll have different people thinking about the different strengths or weaknesses of each console.
So there you have it. If you are a single platform owners then there is no need to worry. You will still be getting a pretty awesome version of Bioshock Infinite.
